THULCANDRA – “Hail the Abyss” album review

In the eternal darkness of the Abyss and the ancient streets among the dead and demons for about an hour, as long as Thulcandra’s new album “Hail the Abyss” lasts.
A black/death atmosphere that takes us back several years.
There are many elements of the 90’s and especially its aesthetics.
The compositions are built on a moderate and in some places fast tempo, with the amazing black vocals followed by the guitars.
The general atmosphere of “Hail the Abyss” is closer to black as are its influences.
Steffen Kummerer, founder of Thulcandra and Obscura, keeps for the latter that progressive death metal experiences and leaves room for black, more atmospheric influences for Thulcandra.
We are not talking here about any parthenogenesis, on the contrary we are talking about an album of influences, without that being a bad thing, which appear constantly.
It goes without saying that Steffen Kummerer has the ability to build on these influences and present complete compositions and consequently a complete album.
I don’t like and don’t usually name influences or similarities and I won’t do it with “Hail the Abyss” either. Of course it will be interesting, because anyone who hears it will certainly combine it with something.
The production is a clean, powerful death/black production, in which Steffen Kummerer has put his hand together with Thomas Taube.
The mixing of the album has been done by the well-known and not exceptional, huge Dan Swanö.
The tracks on “Hail the Abyss” also include two live performances of “The Second Fall” and “Deliverance in Sin and Death” from Thulcandra’s third album entitled “Ascension Lost”.
