Omnivide – “A Tale of Fire” album review

An interesting album fell into my hands, some time ago. It is “A Tale of Fire” by Canadian progressive death metallers Omnivide, which will be released on March 22, 2024.

The album is a mix of progressive metal, technical death metal, death metal and symphonic/power metal. It is a diverse album, where heavy and dark riffs succeed lighter parts with clean vocals.
Also, the epic parts and many orchestral parts and the rhythm that changes, are among the characteristics of “A Tale of Fire”.

Lyrically, Omnivide move on themes that have to do with death. By dying in terms of understanding, pain, but also in shaping the psychology of people, affected by events associated with the end and thirst for life. There are also epic themes related to historical figures, placed through metaphorical concepts, but also developed through aspects of death.

All recordings were made in the home studios of the band members, except for the drums recorded by François Fortin at Studio La Boîte Noire. François also mixed and mastered the album.

One fact that indicates the influences of Omnivide is that the band was born from the ashes of an Opeth Tribute band called Sunbird, which included three of the members of Omnivide (Samuel Frenette, Samuel Lavoie and Nicolas Pierre Boudreau).
After a year of concerts with this band, the three members wanted to write their own music that combined their biggest influences in metal, one of these bands, of course, was Opeth along with others such as Obscura, Black Daliah Murder, Alkaloid and many bands that combine orchestral elements and progressive in their music, like Wintersun and Devin Townsend.

The symbolism of fire on the album cover and title is related to the central theme of death and rebirth throughout the album, as the destruction brought about by fire leaves fertile ground for new things to happen.
