On August 2, 2024, Chilean doom/death metallers Mourners Lament, will release their 2nd full length album “A Grey Farewell” via Personal Records.
The band that has started, its course in the distant 2004, having a hiatus of four years between 2009-2013, released its first album “We All Be Given” in 2016 and after eight years returns with changes in the lineup, but also with the change in the position of the vocals where from 2019, they are taken over by Alfredo Pérez.
Chilean doom/death metallers Mourners Lament’s new album, “A Grey Farewell,” is an exemplary tribute to the dark melancholy and heavy melody that characterize the genre.
From the first listen, it becomes obvious that the band has delved into the roots of doom/death metal, offering a work that pays homage to the classic records of the genre, but without getting bogged down there.
The production of the album is impeccable, with each instrument being clearly audible and contributing to the creation of a heavy and atmospheric sound image.
The guitars are heavy and full creating a wall of sound that surrounds you, while the drums and bass give the extra needed for the music to push us to the darkest paths.
The compositions on “A Grey Farewell” are carefully crafted, with each track unfolding a different aspect of melancholy and loss.
The riffs are slow-burning and sad, slow and heavy that add to the feeling of melancholy.
The lyrics, deeply poetic and full of emotion, speak of loss, grief and the inevitable path to the end, reflecting the personal experiences and feelings of the band members.
The execution by the members of Mourners Lament is impeccable. The vocal performances, in both heavy and clear voices, are charged with intensity and pain, adding depth to the already heavy compositions.
The guitarists demonstrate an excellent technical ability, while the drums and bass keep the backbone of the sound steady and strong.
Among the tracks, “Ocaso” stands out with its imposing atmosphere and destructive riffs, as well as “The Clear Distance,” which beautifully combines melodic lines with heavy, rhythmic changes.
The track “Mass Eulogy,” is the perfect epilogue of the album, summing up the essence of the band’s musical and lyrical direction.
“A Grey Farewell” is an album that does not disappoint. Mourners Lament have managed to create a work that honors its roots, particularly the raw but rich emotion of the early days of Peaceville bands like Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema.
“A Grey Farewell” is an essential addition to the band’s discography and a must-have for fans of the genre.
